Comment

Greece, with its fascinating history, beautiful islands, and perfect climate, makes for an ideal holiday destination, especially when you rent a private villa with James Villas. Enjoy the luxury of having your very own swimming pool and outdoor living space, where you can even try your hand at cooking up some of the regional cuisine on the barbecue. To get your creative culinary juices flowing, we have put together this round up of some of Greece’s most delicious local delicacies.

Moussaka

Everyone’s favourite Greek classic, Moussaka is delicious in both meat and vegetarian options, baked with layers of aubergine, potato and minced lamb, slathered in béchamel sauce. It makes the perfect family meal to share and enjoy together whilst dining al fresco on your private terrace, so grab a bottle of the local red wine and get stuck in!

Souvlaki

Souvlaki are delicious little skewers of meat, traditionally pork in Greece, which have been marinated in a red wine sauce and grilled. They make a great addition to any barbecue, and are versatile enough to serve up with pita, salads or roasted vegetables. And if you’re not a fan of pork, they also work really well made from lamb, or even chicken.

Youvetsi

This traditional beef stew is slowly cooked in a clay pot with a tomato-based sauce, orzo pasta, and a generous helping of grated kefalotyri cheese. This is comfort food at its best, which will go down well with everyone, young and old alike. It is really easy to make, so why not whip up a batch and gather the family round for some quality time together over a hearty meal.

Dolmathakia

Stuffed vine leaves, or dolmathakia, are a little on the tricky side to make, but are well worth the extra bit of effort. They are stuffed with rice, pine nuts and herbs, with the optional extra of adding meat, so will cater to everyone’s tastes. A versatile addition to any table, they can be served warm or cold, and make great starters or appetisers to enjoy with a pre-dinner drink.

Baklava

The perfect treat for those with a sweet tooth, baklava is made with layers of delicate filo pastry, chopped nuts and cinnamon, held together with plenty of honey or syrup. You can enjoy this sugary morsel at any time of day, from breakfast to an after-dinner dessert, or even a little afternoon pick-me-up. There are loads of different varieties to try, so why not pick up a selection from one of the local bakeries. Your kids are sure to love them, too!
