The Best Male Books Of 2014

Comment

The end of the year is on the horizon, so it’s the perfect chance to look back and pick out some of the biggest and best books that have been published over the last twelve months.

Whether you’re looking for a holiday read, a Christmas gift, or maybe just fancy treating yourself now that the cold dark winter nights are here, the team from Men Who Stare At Books are here with their recommendations, both fiction and non-fiction…

FICTION

The Ocean at the End of the Lane – Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is a literary megastar. His novels Stardust and Coraline have been made into major motion pictures. He’s won a heap of awards, such as the Hugo and Nebula awards for American Gods. He’s even written two classic episodes of Doctor Who! This year saw the paperback publication of his latest instant classic, The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

A magical novel of memory and the adventure of childhood, it follows our narrator as he tries to survive in a world of dark creatures and ancient menace, with only the three women who live on a farm at the end of the lane to protect him. Stunning stuff.

Waiting for Doggo – Mark B. Mills

Dan has been dumped by his girlfriend, and has been left to reluctantly look after their recently acquired dog. But try as he might, he just can’t bring himself to take Doggo back to the rescue home. As good things starts to happen to Dan as a result of Doggo’s presence, the old saying about a dog being a man’s best friend starts to come true.

Waiting for Doggo sounds like a romcom, and in many ways it is. It’s very sweet and a little bit cheesy. But don’t let that put you off; it’s also very funny and witty, perfect for male readers, and will leave you with a big smile on your face.

Brothers in Blood – Simon Scarrow

If it’s an epic, swords and sandals adventure packed with battle scenes that you’re after, look no further than Simon Scarrow’s latest novel.

This is the thirteenth Cato and Macro adventure (don’t worry if you haven’t read the others – they also work well as standalones), and sees our heroes back in Britannia to do battle with a traitor in the ranks. Fast-paced and action-packed, this is perfect for any historical fiction fan.
