If You Go Away | Adele Parks

Adele Parks’ latest book ‘If You Go Away’ is a masterclass of romantic fiction that you’ll find hard to put down.

“Curating a list of my top ten favourite romantic movies turned out to be considerably more difficult than I initially imagined.

I believe we watch movies, read novels and listen to music not simply to be entertained but to find ourselves in the art, in the characters and in the plots; we want to be validated or comforted, so a lot of my choices are connected to particularly turbulent or exciting times in my romantic life. I also realised that I have a leaning towards the tragic when I think about romantic movies.

I’m all about the ‘what if’, the missed opportunities, the aching brevity of adoration and the unsuitable unions that are doomed from the start. Undeniably longing, unrequited love, passionate triangles and the violent end to love has provided the themes for some of cinema’s most celebrated and uncompromising movies. I love a grand, sweeping, weepy epic of a film; I’m also seduced by heartbreaking, stiff upper lips and dignified self-sacrifice.

After much soul searching I distilled my choice down to the following:

1. Moulin Rouge (2001)

2. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

4. Titanic (1998)

5. A Very Long Engagement (2004)

6. Gone With The Wind (1939)

7. Casablanca (1942)

8. Romeo + Juliet (1996)

9. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

10. Dangerous Liaisons (1988)”
